The Sorceress and her KnightSorceresses are greatly feared in the FF8 world. They have supernatural powers, and can grow corrupt over time. A sorceress is born when she receives the powers from a dying sorceress. It is said that in order to die in peace, a sorceress must be free of all her powers. In FF8, four sorceresses are known - Ultimecia, Adel, Edea, and later on, Rinoa. Not everyone can be a sorceress - she has to be capable of such powers in order to receive them. Edea is the matron of the orphanage and received her powers from a previous sorceress at the age of 5. She also received Ultimecia's powers 13 years ago, in order to protect the children. But unlike Ultimecia and Adel, she has a knight - Cid Kramer. A sorceress' knight serves to protect her heart and keep her from turning evil. However, Edea knows that she may fall under the control of another sorceress one day so her idea of Garden and SeeDs are born. Garden trains SeeDs, and SeeDs are trained to defeat the sorceress. She creates them knowing that one day, her own SeeDs may end up fighting against her, and it eventually does happens. When Rinoa becomes a sorceress, she is scared that people will reject her, hate her for what she has become. Rinoa: "I've... become a sorceress. I can't stay with you anymore, Squall. I don't want the future. I want the present to stand still. I just want to stay here with you..." Rinoa decides to seal herself in the Sorceress Memorial, where Ultimecia won't be able to control her anymore... Where she'd no longer be a threat to the world. But that would mean never seeing Squall and her friends again. Squall: "Rinoa! Don't go!" So Squall lets her go, resolving that it was her decision and he had no right to object. Of course, his friends all call him a fool and he ends up saving her and they reunite.
Later at the flower field, they talk about the future. Squall assures her that he will protect her... and be her knight. Rinoa: "What'll become of me?" |
